Now, don’t get me wrong… I don’t support the dominance theory of resource guarding, where you must assert ownership over every resource before giving it to your dog. Nor do I agree with the idea that you should never interact with your dog while they eat, fearing it will cause resource guarding behaviors.

I believe that building a natural bond based on trust makes any handling during mealtime insignificant. These dogs couldn’t care less about me taking their food and it’s not because they know I won’t steal it but because they know I have their best interests at heart and trust my judgement.

If your dog shows resource guarding behaviours, I don’t recommend handling them while they eat but rather focus on building trust around food.

Akila was the best first dog I could have ever hoped for. Though his time with us was brief, his memory will always hold a special place in my heart. In honor of him, I’ve named my current dog Alika, a tribute to Akila and a way to keep his legacy alive. Everything unfolds for a reason… trust the journey.

Situations like these are tricky and there’s unfortunately an infinite number of possibilities on what you can do and they all depend on the dog you’re handling.

In this video, I was working with Bonnie, who is only mildly reactive to other dogs and triggered by very particular stressors. Knowing this, I didn’t worry too much about the nearby dogs and put most of my attention in maintaining Bonnie’s engagement. The dogs eventually got bored and continued on. It’s important to note that by me not making a big deal of the situation I demonstrated to Bonnie that she too shouldn’t perceive it as a big deal.

However… if I was handling a different dog, my response would’ve likely been different.

Know your dog, how they respond and act accordingly!

There are too many benefits to running with your dog that there’s not point even listing them here 🙈 Just go run with your dog and you’ll learn for yourself!

Playing with your dog is so important to their relationship with you!

Each dog will have their own play style whether they like tug, chase or wrestle and depending on this, play will look different for everybody.

But playing with your dog may not be as easy as it sounds. There’s a few things you need to do in the early stages of play to ensure the game is played “right”. Similar to a game of soccer we need to set some boundaries. We will require a start cue, a half time marker or out, a restart signal and fair play so nobody’s hands get bit.

There’s multiple ways these signals can be taught and each individual dog will look different.

This weekend we took on 3 races; canicross, bikejoring and for the first time 1 dog scooter. Thank you @carbine.canine for letting me borrow Kesha while Alika was at home recovering from possible meningitis, Bikejor wouldn’t have been possible without a dog to run. The dogs ran amazing and impressed us all. Their efforts will definitely be rewarded with some good @hypropremium tonight!

Meet our trainer’s dogs, Kuvira & Alika!

Kuvira, on the right, is a Belgian Malinois with a high drive, stable and social nature. Because of her high energy and eagerness to work she has been trained in various sports to provide her genetic fulfilment. She is currently 3 years old with high achieving titles in Mondioring, Protection Sport Association, Bikejoring and Canicross.

Alika, on the left, is the daughter of Kuvira, possessing a very similar nature to her mother. Alika is extremely social, stable and has got a lot of energy. From the time we got her, she’s been training for Mondioring and PSA as well as dryland mushing sports. She is currently 1 years old with one title in Canicross.

Meet Anna, a 5 month old Cavoodle working on building a reward marker linked to her name. This way when Anna fixates on other dogs or distractions in her environment we have a communication system in place to let her know that what she is doing is correct. Because of her tendency to hyper focus on other dogs we used this new communication system to work on her engagement with her handlers around a calm, stable dog.

PUPPY SOCIALISATION is often mistaken with taking your dog to the dog park to play with other dogs. But this couldn’t be more far from wrong.

The most important skill for a dog is engagement on you regardless of what’s happening around them. This means in the presence of another dog, your dog would rather play with you. For this to happen, we like to start training early by creating value in ourselves when the dog is young. We do this in various locations, environments and situations to generalise our training and ensure our pup is confident with its surroundings. In the end, we have a mature dog that is content with the distractions around them and decides it would rather play with us.

LITTERMATE SYNDROME

Littermate syndrome is a less known issue for many first time or even second time pet owners.

Littermate syndrome is a term used when dogs from the same litter or puppies of similar age are raised together from young, developing an inseparable bond, creating unwanted behaviours that become difficult to reverse.

This is not to be mistaken with a regular bond two dogs have where they enjoy each other’s company and can have a good play. This is completely fine and in fact a great social outlet for your dogs.

However, it becomes a problem when…
1. Neither dog is able to focus on you while they’re together
2. Both dogs become extremely anxious when separated
3. Both dogs bully other dogs as a partnership
4. One dog relies on the other for confidence
5. Severe fighting between dogs as they mature

These are the main behavioural concerns you’ll notice with puppies that are raised together without adequate time and training alone.

To avoid this issue all in all, don’t adopt two puppies of similar age at the same time, keeping at least a year age gap. Depending on the dog the age gap may vary and solo time would still be beneficial.

If you are set on adopting two puppies of the same age, there are few steps to take to avoid Littermate syndrome from developing.

These include…
1. Limiting time together in the early stages of development
2. Individual training and bonding for both dogs
3. Separate dogs when unmonitored
4. Individual social and environment exposure
5. Freedom is earned when both dogs are able to respond to commands reliably in the presence of each other

Crate training is slowly becoming more and more popular with owners understanding the benefits they have. Here are 5 benefits I believe crate training brings…

1. Fast tracks toilet training

Dogs instinctively won’t toilet where they sleep. That’s why using a crate for puppies and young dogs makes it easier to schedule their potty breaks. If dogs are in a crate they will commonly whine when they need to toilet, giving you a clear signal to let them out. However, it’s important you don’t reinforce this whining for anything other than toileting or your dog will quickly learn noise results in freedom.

2. Safe place during unmonitored times

Dogs get into all sorts of trouble and if you’re not there to monitor them, this may go bad really quick. Allowing a dog to rehearse bad behaviours while you’re away such as digging, barking, counter surfing, destructiveness, escaping ect. will only lead to and increase in these behaviours and the likelihood of them harming themselves. Crate training them ensures they will be comfortable and stay out of trouble.

3. Safety while commuting

Crates are the safest way for pets to travel. Whether that be by plane or car, there are crates on the market that are “crash tested” ensuring your dog is kept as safe as possible during a collision.

4. Vet visits

If your pet ever needs to stay at the vets over day or night, they will most certainly be confined to a crate. Ensuring your dog is already crate trained means being crated won’t contribute to the added stress of being away from home.

5. Emotional regulation

Some dogs struggle to regulate their emotions. A common example of this are dogs that become overly excited when guests are around, struggling to refrain from jumping or barking all over them. Utilising a crate while you have guests over sets clear boundaries and forces your dog to work through their emotions and learn how to self regulate. Once they’ve mastered this skill, the crate becomes an optional space the dog can retreat to if they decide they’d like to.

One of the biggest mistakes new puppy owners make… is only ever training their dog at home.

Starting off training in the living room at home is great as your pup is comfortable and least distracted. However, it’s important to move this training outside to new environments as soon as possible. Any time you enter a new location engage with your dog and make training fun. Keep in mind, you may need to take a step back in your training, as it takes time for your dog to generalise behaviours and build it up again.

Taking your training outside, ensures your dog will not only listen for dinner scraps but obey commands anywhere and everywhere. It also helps your dog associate “outside” time to interacting with you, creating a stronger bond everyday.

Owning a dog isn’t always as easy as it seems…

This dog in the video was my first dog and by far the most challenging. She developed severe dog reactivity and was a nightmare to take anywhere. It wasn’t till she was around 3 years old that I could comfortably and confidently take her pretty much everywhere with me, and additional 2 years for the training to be generalised to everyone she was handled by.

Training isn’t easy and results aren’t always seen immediately. But when you reflect on where you started you realise you’ve progressed more than you could’ve imagined and forgot the struggle you went through. So take a minute to reflect on how far you’ve come!

Multi-dog households are always an interesting and incredibly nuanced topic…

Living with multiple dogs can be overwhelming!

Every combination of dogs will serve their own unique set of challenges and be accommodated accordingly. However, when dealing with multiple dogs in the same house regardless of breed, age, sex or temperament a generic rule always applies to minimise conflict.

This rule is “structure”

Creating structure in the home creates a mutual understanding between the dogs and a clear communication system through you. This helps minimise the risk of unwanted behaviours that may lead to situations of fighting, bullying or over submission.

Here are a few examples of what structure may look like…

🦴 If one dog is given a resource (food/toy/etc.) no other dog is permitted to challenge the other for that resource
🦴 If play is permitted in the house, any dog that escalates the game will be punished
🦴 Any form of bullying is terminated
🦴 Non-reciprocated play is stopped
🦴 Setting specific boundaries for individual dogs (ie. Older dogs permitted on the couch, younger dogs not)
🦴Crating dogs when unmonitored
🦴 Providing individual bonding/training time

These are the main ways for implementing structure into a multi-dog household. However, structure for each individual dog may have its own unique approach depending on their current behaviour and training.

As we all know, Australia doesn’t have much snow, so we participate in a version of sledding called dry land mushing. There are various races you can enter, including CaniX, Bikejoring, 1-2 dog Scooter or 4-6 dog Rigs. This means any dog or any owner can participate regardless of skill level.
